Marriage 101: Building a Life Together by Faith, published by Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group is the award winner in the Religion: Christian Inspiration category of the National Best Books 2009 Awards sponsored by USA Book News. The author, Jewell R. Powell, takes couples back to the definition of marriage and teaches them to lay a spiritual foundation upon which their marriage can flourish--and last.
Powell's is a story many African-American couples know all too well, whether it's in their own lives or in those of close family and friends.
She traces the spiritual journey of how she and her husband went from engaged and enthusiastic to frustrated and separated, revealing the real issues that plagued their partnership and the myriad of challenges they faced. She shares the anguish she felt, looking at what was supposed to be "happily ever after" and how she and her husband were able to rebuild their relationship. The book reveals what they learned along the way as they implemented eight biblical truths. This book includes workbook sections to lead individual or group studies through an eight-week course.
The book has proven especially popular for churches' marriage and premarital counseling programs.
Marriage 101 was also an award-winning finalist in the Self Help: Relationships category and its companion Faith, Hope, & Love Journal was an award-winning finalist in the Self Help: Journal & Quotes category.
Powell states, "I am honored. Marriage 101 is a message of faith, hope, and love for the black community. A successful marriage is possible, not just for the black celebrities we know and love, but also for all couples who are willing to put the necessary work into having a great marriage."
Jewell R. Powell is an inspirational speaker and marriage coach. Her education includes the University of Maryland, VCMI Ministerial Training School, and Regent University School of Divinity. She and her husband Lewis founded the "Happily Ever After" Marriage Ministry, which equips couples to overcome marital difficulties.
